Scorpio, Love Her Or Leave Her
Scorpio As The Foundational Energy Of The New Year On The Turn Of The Wheel And Our Coming Dark Moon
Like many others, tomorrow's Dark Moon is the lunation cycle that ushers in my spiritual new year. Years before I started celebrating the agricultural Wheel of the Year and observing Samhain as my new year, I recognized the value and depth of the Scorpio season as a ground zero for one's new year.
While I did not yet have words for my musings, I felt an inner knowing that I now call "deeper truth", and this deeper truth remains inescapable.
Today's post is to share some about tomorrow's Dark Moon energy, but it is mostly an invitation to feel into Scorpio as an archetype and evolutionary urge to step into life's fullness at the start of Samhain Season for those of us that consider it our spiritual new year.
Scorpio points to absolute truth. She needs it to participate successfully in growth/enlightenment/evolution/call it what you will. She is motivated by values that speak of merging into the expansiveness of human consciousness and courageously surfing the waters of vulnerability and emotional reality.
She is passionate, yes, and not without depth. That depth brings about her intensity…
But how could she be any different or any less when complete and irrevocable knowing of one's truest Self comes through Scorpio’s regeneration. This is what her season is about, her Dark Moon phase is about, and this is the energy one can expect to find from the area of their chart where Scorpio is found.
We can take it, or we can leave it.
That said... If we 'leave it", turn away from it, deny it, repress it... It comes back like a vengeance at the most inopportune times.
Yes, much like the Shadow.
Scorpio is known for her thirst for control and hunger for power. We can take that or leave it as well...
But, be sure to know in her highest octave, she is motivated by energies that bring forth absolute self-empowerment and self-control.
She is, after all, a sliding paradox of truth, just like all other zodiacal signs. The way she comes alive as she crashes through our walls of illusion and Egoic protective measures has given her intensity a bad name.
Well, that, and...
She can be a complete bitch. Just like anything or anyone else that pokes and stabs at our deepest fears and insecurities, drawing them out to the light to be examined, and then prodded some more.
Ahhh.
I just love me some Scorpio! I'll take brutal honesty from someone with evolved Scorpio energy before delicate tip-toeing or double talk from anyone else, even if I know them, love them, and trust them.
Now... Let's look at the invitation of the Dark Moon as it applies to us tomorrow.
For anyone that may be questioning what I mean as tomorrow is marked as the Moon's New Moon phase, allow me to unravel this just a bit...
In my astrological practices as well as in my spiritual, magickal, and esoteric practices... When there is no visible Moon in our nighttime sky, this is called the Dark Moon. The New Moon is typically the following night or two nights later (depending on the time of the Dark Moon) when we start to see her crescent shine. This is her new phase and reflects her growing energy.
The Dark Moon, on the other hand, is when Grandmother Moon has shifted into her contemplative state. The... Pause... Before she fills our world with the frequency of growth.
Energetically, this Lunar phase supports Scorpio's motivations around digging out the truth and seeing things for what they are. If we allow it, we can turn down the Egoic activity of our thinking minds and allow information from our unconscious minds to move forward.
If we are courageous enough to pull new material forward, it will add to the bigger story of what is illuminated in weeks to come at our next Full Moon phase.
In the astrology I practice, planets (including the Sun and Moon) represent psychological urges within human consciousness. The Moon has many things that she corresponds with, but when it comes to psychological urges, we are loosely looking at our innate tendency to bond, nurture, and heal. (The Moon also corresponds with our emotions, intuition, motherly instincts, domestic relationships, our subconscious, and memories.)
When our psychological urges to bond, nurture, and heal (the Moon) enter evolutionary motivations and values around absolute truth (Scorpio) during a Dark Moon phase... We are being granted the opportunity to know ourselves more deeply if we are willing to see and accept our subjective absolute truth… And do something about it.
We can expect tomorrow's Dark Moon to pull up some Scorpionic motifs from the underbellies of our unconscious. It may feel intense, uncomfortable, and/or downright debilitating, particularly for those of us who struggle with emotional transparency, talking about the past, or coming face to face with Shadowy material.
Deeper truths. Unspoken truths. Untouched wounds, beliefs, stories, and inter-relational trauma. The types of things that want nothing more than the loving, nurturing energies of a grandmother's healing hugs, kisses, and autumnal stew.
The apex of the Dark Moon is at 4:27 am EST and may bring about dream states that tell us stories about the information coming up the surface to be exposed... Again, if we are courageous enough to carry this information forward.
The Moon shifts into fiery, expansive, and adventurous Sagittarius about nine hours later, but not before Scorpio beckons us to look deeper, be honest, and take responsibility for the things we learn about ourselves.
While I don't want to pull at the many threads and players in the overall energies of tomorrow's Dark Moon, I will say that Scorpio's classical ruler, Mars, is sitting in Scorpio along with the Sun and the Moon.
He, too, is passionate but he is not on Scorpio's mission for truth. His mission is to carve out and define our personal goals saturated in a psychological urge that involves protecting oneself. (Hmmmm, ever wonder where those very Scorpionic traits came from?)
I have pointed out Mars because he is a substantial player for anyone who celebrates a personal, spiritual, or agricultural new year at Samhain. As we are still in Samhain season, having just crossed through those astronomical gates on the 7th, we are likely still in our reflection and planning stages for the coming year.
This is where I circle back to the start of this article and pull together its closing...
Scorpio's evolutionary motivation to step into life's fullness is evident this time of year, and it is supportive of personal growth, leading to potential social and collective growth. Do you recognize the value and depth of the Scorpio season as a ground zero for one's new year?
It is truly exquisite, isn't it?
The Scorpio Dark Moon goes hand and hand with a key player for urging our personal goals forward... Her classical ruler and partner in passion, Mars. He is nothing if not one to take action which is great for new year planning or New Moon intentions...
Let's just be cautious of his urgency towards aggression when challenged or threatened. With the Moon in Scorpio, our emotional selves can feel that way, especially if we have not done a lot of inner (or Shadow) work around Lunar and Scorpio motifs!
With that, I will close with an invitation for us all…
Let’s remember that the Dark Moon is the phase where our great cosmic elder, Grandmother Moon, models contemplation… The act of looking at something thoughtfully for a long time… This is not a time for Mars’ action just yet. Let’s be with Scorpio’s regenerative motivations, and nurture them with the loving presence of our own inner Moons. Perhaps offering the healing hand of presence and witnessing of what comes up for us.
I’m willing to wager it will be stuff that hasn’t been witnessed for a long time if ever.
